Tax investigations can be intimidating and costly. To help protect yourself it is advisable to seek expert advice as soon as possible. John Eldridge and his team at McBrides have dealt with many clients who have experienced differing types of tax investigations, ranging from income tax and VAT, through to PAYE investigations.
Many tax investigations begin life as general enquiries from the HMRC department in question. If these enquiries are not dealt with promptly and accurately, it is possible that a full investigation will quickly follow. Early intervention by an accountant can prevent this.
In some cases, it is impossible to avoid an investigation, as HMRC performs general visits which require certain records and evidence to back up any claims or returns you have made. These are not full tax investigations, and should be treated with caution, with a view to eliminating the risk of a full investigation occurring.
In these circumstances, it is advisable to contact a suitably experienced accountant immediately, who should be able to provide help and support, and confirm which records to supply to HMRC as evidence.

fee protection insurance
As a matter of best practice, we recommend that all our clients take out fee protection insurance, which covers the professional fees involved in representing them in case of an HMRC review or investigation. This insurance provides peace of mind for the client, and enables us to take the necessary time to assist with the review or investigation and prepare the best defence possible.
Fee protection insurance covers the cost of our assistance with PAYE, national insurance, CIS scheme and status enquiries, VAT and restricted and full blown income tax and corporation tax enquires.
